A conventional Knee-Ankle-Foot Orthosis (KAFO) is a rigid support device used to stabilize the knee, ankle, and foot in individuals with weakness or paralysis in the lower limbs. It typically consists of metal components, such as aluminum or stainless steel, and may include leather straps, knee and ankle joints, and hinges. The knee joint often features locking mechanisms to prevent unwanted movement, while the ankle joint may be adjustable for varying degrees of mobility. Conventional KAFOs provide greater control and stability compared to lighter, more flexible orthoses, making them suitable for individuals with significant motor impairments, though they can be bulkier and less comfortable for some users.
