A Hip Knee Ankle Foot Orthosis (HKAFO) is a full lower-limb orthotic device designed to provide support, alignment, and stability to the hip, knee, ankle, and foot joints. It is primarily used for individuals with severe lower limb weakness or paralysis, such as in cases of spinal cord injury, spina bifida, muscular dystrophy, or post-polio syndrome. The HKAFO consists of a pelvic band or hip section, knee joints, uprights, ankle joints, and footplates or shoes. The device stabilizes the lower limbs and pelvis, allowing limited ambulation, often with the assistance of crutches or walkers. The hip joint may be free-moving, locked, or have limited motion, depending on the patient’s needs. The HKAFO helps prevent joint deformities, assists in standing and walking, and improves posture and balance. It is custom-made to fit the individual and requires proper training and rehabilitation for effective use. Regular follow-up ensures comfort and function.
