A body-powered above-elbow prosthesis is a type of artificial limb designed for individuals with an amputation above the elbow. It functions through a system of cables and harnesses that are controlled by the user’s own body movements, typically involving the shoulders, upper back, or chest. When the user moves their body in specific ways, the tension in the cables activates the mechanical elbow joint and terminal device (such as a hook or prosthetic hand).

The prosthesis consists of several components: a socket (which fits over the residual limb), a mechanical elbow joint, a cable-controlled system, and a terminal device. The elbow joint allows the arm to bend and lock into different positions, while the terminal device allows for basic grasping functions.

Body-powered prostheses are durable, relatively lightweight, and do not require batteries or electronics. They are especially useful in physically demanding environments and provide functional control, though they may have a more limited range of motion and grip strength compared to myoelectric options.
